Simple Styling Tricks That Can Completely Transform Your Outfit
We’ve all had that moment where we stand in front of a wardrobe full of clothes and somehow decide we have absolutely nothing to wear.
Which is particularly impressive when there are approximately 47 tops hanging in there.
But before you reach for your phone and start browsing for something new, it might be worth looking at your existing wardrobe slightly differently. Sometimes, an outfit isn’t actually boring, you’ve just worn it the same way every time.
A few tiny styling tweaks can make a surprisingly big difference. Swap your shoes, change where your top sits, add a belt, throw on a jacket or introduce a completely different texture and suddenly that outfit you’d mentally retired has a new lease of life.
And the best bit? It doesn’t cost a thing!
Try Changing the Shape
One of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel completely different is to play around with proportions.
If you usually wear a loose jumper with relaxed trousers, try tucking the jumper in at the front or swapping the trousers for something more fitted. Wearing wide-leg trousers? Try a fitted T-shirt, a cropped cardigan or a shirt tucked into the waistband to give the outfit a little more definition.
You can also create shape without changing the clothes themselves. A belt around a loose blazer or dress can instantly give you a waist, while a simple half-tuck can make an oversized shirt look much more intentional.
And yes, the same applies to maxi dresses. Their long, floaty silhouette can look completely different depending on what you put over the top. Try adding a cropped jacket, a little cardigan or even a belt to break up the length and create a more defined shape.
Suddenly, it’s not the same dress anymore. Well, technically it is. But you know what I mean.
Give Your Accessories More Attention
Accessories have a slightly unfair reputation for being the finishing touches. Sometimes, they’re actually the main event.
Think about the difference between your favourite jeans and a plain knit worn with trainers and a tiny handbag, compared with exactly the same outfit paired with bold earrings, a colourful bag and a great pair of boots.
Same clothes. Completely different mood.
If your outfit is feeling a little bland, pick one accessory to do the talking. A bright handbag, oversized sunglasses, a patterned scarf, chunky jewellery or a pair of shoes you normally save for “somewhere nice” can be enough to make everything feel more considered.
You don’t need to accessorise yourself to within an inch of your life, either. In fact, one really good piece will often have more impact than six things fighting for attention!
Start Layering Differently
British weather has accidentally made us experts in clever layering, but there’s a difference between throwing on another jumper because you’re freezing and actually using layers to make an outfit look good.
Try wearing a shirt underneath a knitted jumper, a blazer over a simple T-shirt or a trench coat over something unexpectedly casual.
You can also play around with lengths. A longer shirt peeking out underneath a shorter jumper or jacket adds a little contrast and makes an otherwise straightforward outfit look much more deliberate.
And don’t be afraid to layer pieces you wouldn’t normally put together. A feminine dress with a chunky cardigan? A blazer over a hoodie? A leather jacket with something floaty?
Fashion is far less serious than we sometimes make it.
Mix Up Your Textures
If an outfit is looking a little flat, the answer might not be colour. It could be texture.
There’s something about mixing fabrics that makes even the simplest outfit feel more interesting. Try soft knitwear with denim, satin with leather, suede with cotton or something floaty with a chunkier layer.
It’s particularly useful if you tend to stick to a fairly neutral colour palette. An outfit made up of black, cream and beige can still have plenty of personality if you’re mixing different textures and finishes.
And if you’re feeling brave, introduce one colour you don’t normally wear.
A burgundy bag, bright red shoes or a colourful jumper can be enough to make your usual neutrals feel completely different without requiring a full wardrobe overhaul.
Wear Your “Nice” Clothes on an Ordinary Day
This might be my favourite styling trick of all: stop saving things for later.
That dress you bought for an occasion? Wear it with trainers and a denim jacket. Your favourite blazer? Put it with jeans. The lovely blouse you keep waiting for the “right” event to wear? Try it with everyday trousers.
Sometimes, we get so used to thinking of clothes as belonging to certain occasions that we forget they can be mixed up.
A piece doesn’t have to be dressed up just because it can be.
And equally, your everyday clothes don’t have to stay casual. A pair of jeans can look surprisingly polished with a smart jacket, pointed shoes and a great bag.
Take Something Away
Styling isn’t always about adding more.
If an outfit feels a bit “meh”, try taking something away instead. Remove the necklace. Lose the belt. Swap the oversized bag for something smaller. Roll up your sleeves. Leave the shirt untucked.
Sometimes the smallest change is the one that makes everything click.
It’s also a good reminder that you don’t need to follow a complicated list of fashion rules to get dressed well. Your wardrobe is there to be experimented with.
So next time you find yourself thinking I have nothing to wear, resist the urge to immediately start shopping.
Tuck something in. Roll something up. Add a belt. Change your shoes. Put a jacket over it. Wear the dress you’ve been saving for a “special occasion” on a Tuesday.
You might be surprised by how many different outfits are hiding in a wardrobe you thought you’d already figured out.
And, thankfully, they’re all technically free!
