Sometimes, Changing Your Life Starts at Home
We often talk about changing our lives as though it requires one enormous, dramatic decision.
A new job. A completely different routine. Moving to another city. Becoming the sort of person who gets up at 5am for a sunrise run and somehow still has time to make homemade granola.
But sometimes, a lifestyle change starts somewhere much less dramatic…at home!
The spaces around us can have a surprisingly big influence on what we actually do every day. If your home makes a habit easy, you’re far more likely to stick with it. If it makes everything feel like hard work, well… suddenly that new year’s resolution doesn’t seem quite so appealing.
Start With the Habits You Actually Want
Think about something you’ve been meaning to do more often.
Perhaps you want to eat a better breakfast instead of grabbing a biscuit on your way out of the door. If that’s the goal, maybe your kitchen help you out. Keep fruit somewhere visible, make sure the foods you actually enjoy are in the fridge and have the things you need ready to go.
In other words, suppose that you aspire to eat a healthy breakfast every morning - don’t make your kitchen an obstacle course before you’ve even had your coffee!
The same principle applies to exercise.
If you’re constantly saying you’ll work out more, but your weights are buried beneath Christmas decorations in the garage, it’s going to feel like more of a chore to stick to the habit. Perhaps it’s time to convert the garage into a gym, or simply create a small workout corner somewhere in the house.
It doesn’t need to look like an influencer’s home gym. A yoga mat, some weights and enough floor space to move around might be all you need. The trick is making the habit feel easy (ish) and accessible!
Your Home Can Influence How You Feel, Too
Your surroundings can affect how relaxed, organised or comfortable you feel. A bedroom that’s full of clutter isn’t necessarily going to make winding down at night particularly easy. Likewise, a home office that feels chaotic might not be the best environment for getting through a busy working day.
You don’t have to redecorate the entire house. Sometimes just clearing one surface, moving furniture around or creating a dedicated space for something you enjoy can make a room feel completely different.
And there’s something quite satisfying about giving a forgotten corner of your home a purpose.
That spare room you’ve been using as a dumping ground? It could become a reading nook.
The corner of the bedroom that’s currently home to an ever-growing pile of clothes? It could become a little dressing area.
The dining table? Ideally, it would return to being a dining table rather than the permanent headquarters of your laptop, paperwork and three mugs of cold tea.
What Is Your Home Actually Worth?
There is another side to making changes at home, of course - money.
If you’re considering renovations, extensions or a move, understanding your property’s current value can be useful. A house valuation might cause you to think differently about what you want to do next.
Perhaps you’ve discovered that your home has increased in value and you’re considering whether to invest some of that into improvements. Or perhaps you’re wondering whether moving somewhere better suited to your current lifestyle makes more sense.
Either way, having a realistic idea of where you stand financially can make those decisions feel much less like guesswork. And you don’t necessarily have to make a huge decision immediately.
Think Small Before You Think About Moving
There’s a temptation to believe that a fresh start requires a new house.
Sometimes it does. But sometimes your existing home simply needs a little rethink.
Try tackling one room at a time. Clear out the things you don’t use. Move furniture around. Create spaces for the activities you want to do more often. If you’ve always wanted to read more, make your favourite chair somewhere you actually want to sit. If you’d like to exercise regularly, make your equipment easy to reach. If you want calmer mornings, organise the kitchen the night before.
None of these changes are particularly revolutionary, but small adjustments seem to be much easier to maintain than one enormous attempt to overhaul your entire life.
Give Yourself Something to Work Towards
Maybe you’re saving for an extension, dreaming about a garden makeover or considering moving somewhere with an extra bedroom. Having an idea of what you want your home (and your life) to look like in a few years can help you make sensible decisions now.
And you don’t have to do everything at once. Your home can evolve alongside you.
The house that worked perfectly when you first moved in might need to change as your priorities do. Perhaps you work from home now, have children, have taken up a new hobby or simply want your surroundings to feel more like you.
Your Home Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Ultimately, changing your lifestyle doesn’t have to begin with a dramatic makeover or a completely new postcode.
Sometimes it’s as simple as moving the fruit bowl, clearing the spare room or finally doing something useful with that garage.
Your surroundings should make the life you want to live a little easier, rather than make you feel as though you’re constantly fighting against them.
So before you start looking for your next house, have a look around the one you’ve already got.
You might be surprised by what a few small changes can do!
