Last Sunday marked the official start of spring and there’s no better way to celebrate than planning some Great Little Breaks away. Perhaps you already used some of your paid leave over the recent holidays, though, and can’t get any more time off?
No need to worry. Even with just a short, weekend trip you can still see the highlights of a city or experience a relaxing spa break. If you travel on the Friday evening beforehand, it shouldn’t interrupt your regular schedule too much either.
The Weather Is Starting to Improve
With the worst of the winter weather well and truly behind us, we can start to look forward to temperatures rising. Not only does this mean that you can start to pack away the winter coats and wooly jumpers, but we’ll also start to see the flowers bloom outside.
Visiting places like Amsterdam without the tulips in full bloom can make it seem like a different city, or, if you’d prefer to stick closer to home, you can take in the sights and smells at the Spring Flower Show in Harrogate.
Overall Prices Are Much Lower
Another advantage to holidaying in the spring time is that the prices are much lower compared to peak summer rates. That’s right, everything from your travel expenses, accommodation, and even the taxi fares you’ll pay will be reduced. This should be an incentive for anybody, nevermind those specifically looking to travel on a budget.
You’ll also benefit from the fact that there’s less tourists around in general. This means no more rubbing shoulders in a crowded museum or having to spend ages in line to see your favourite show.
Experiencing Unique Spring Festivals
Finally, one of the best reasons to go travelling in Spring is to experience the unique festivals that only occur this time of year. On April 27th is Koningsdag in the Netherlands, also known as Orange Day, where as many as 800,000 people can gather in the capital to take part in the festivities.
May 7th to the 29th is the Brighton Festival, a three-week annual celebration of the arts that is the largest of its kind in England. This year marks the historic 50th year of the festival and it’s sure to be a memorable one.
